Mourning the passing of Rennard Strickland

Rennard Strickland It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of renowned legal historian and Indian law scholar Rennard Strickland who died Jan. 5, 2021, in Norman, Oklahoma.

From 1972 to 1985, Strickland served at TU as John Shleppey Research Professor of Law and later as interim dean of the law school. He also made a generous gift of Pre-Columbian and Mississippian pottery collections to the university in 1983.

Strickland was a Muskogee native of Osage and Cherokee heritage. He was frequently cited by courts and scholars for his work as revision editor-in-chief of Felix Cohen’s Handbook of Federal Indian Law. He was a former dean of the University of Oregon School of Law and most recently served on the faculty of the University of Oklahoma College of Law.

Strickland is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, a niece and a nephew. Our hearts go out to the family in this time of loss. A complete obituary may be found online.
